Hey guys,

just got a new DS112+ witha WD Red 3TB Drive yesterday and studied the complete manual. But I have to say that the manual doesn't go into much detail for us noobs, just covers that basics.

So I thought I post my outstanding questions here and explain what and how I intend to use my DS112+

OLD SETUP
My previous setup was only Win7 and my backup strategy was as follows:

My OS was backed up via TrueImage onto a separate HDD (let's call it HHD1)
My data was backup onto another HDD (HHD2)
My most important data was backed up again to two separate cloud providers that offer local encryption before upload

NEW SETUP
Now I have switched to Mac completely and will continue to use Windows 8 via Parallels and definitely want to keep up my good backup ethics.

I will have OSX installed on my iMac Mid 2011 (MontainLion) in Raid 0 soon, so backup is more important than before :mrgreen: I will also be using a system wide FilesVault encryption.

So here's what I want to do with my NAS:

Mac & Window File access

F1) I would like to access my files on my DS in a way that acts like a normal HDD as if it were installed in my Mac without having to log into my DS or mounting any drives on start up?
F2) Sync my files (one folder really) from my local OS HDD to the DS directory so I have one master copy on my OS HDD and one mirror copy on my NAS.

Media
M1) Itunes Server, but leave my music files in the same folder so that other music apps can use it as well without any redundancies
M2) XBMC (and maybe additionally Plex) for my video files and (optionally music files), also leaving these files where they are right now without having to move them to another folder.

Proposed folder structure would be something like this:

Media (subfolders below)
-->Movies
-->Music
-->Ebooks
-->Other

My folder

Internet Access
I1) Have access to all my files via the internet
I2) Be able to download and upload these files
I3) Be able to stream my music and videos from the internet

Backups
B1) Backup my Mac via Time Machine
B2) Backup my Mac via CCC to the NAS (Backup my COMPLETE Mac via CCC (also backup my Mac to a bootable USB 3.0 2,5" HDD) in any case)
B3) Backup my Website to the DS pointing the webhosters backup directory to my DS?
B4) Backup my files to NAS
B5) Backup my files to an external non-NAS drive
B6) Backup my most important files (approx. 35 GB) to a Cloud provider

Proposed folder structure would be something like this:

Backups (subfolders below)
-->TimeMachine
-->CCC
-->Files
-->Website

Contact Sync
C1) Setup a all-in-one contact source via LDAP so my email clients all use the same source of contacts and I don't have to fiddle with multiple contact sources and merge them

Questions I still have:

Maybe you can explain how and what I need to do in order to achieve these things in lay man terms.

F1) How would I go about achieving F1? And how would this scenario look like if I were to encrypt these files? Do I need to key the password in every time at startup?

F2) Is there a way to have the DS automatically sync these files from my OS HDD to a specific folder on the DS when changes or new files are created?

- Does the DS encrypt the access to the internal HDD via the user account I use to log into the DS? I question I have here: Is someone where to get hold of my HDD could they somehow access my files on there? Is the user account and password enough or do I need to encrypt those files separately? And can I encypt the whole disk like Truecrypt's FDE?

M1+M2) Does the iTunesServer or XBMC require their own copy of files, meaning do these apps add some "crap" to the directory?

B1+B2) Is it possible to make a bootable CCC backup onto my NAS so I can use it as a bootable network drive in case I have to reinstall the backup? I read somewhere that you need some kind of SAN iSCSI Initiator driver...Whatever that is :?

- Are my folder structures OK or do I need to change something due to encryption or any of these apps accessing them?:)
