Last Thursday I had one of the 6TB HDDs in my old DS1812+ develop 369 bad sectors but was still showing as healthy. I thought I might as well buy larger drives for my DS1821+ and move it's drive to my Asustor and move it's drives to the old DS1812+.
So my plan was:
So for $5000 AUD I would gain:
So on Friday I took the cheap and fast option and ordered 1 x new 6TB HDD for the DS1812+ for $289 AUD.
As the RAID rebuild progressed I occasionally got messages of "I/O connection errors due to possible bad sectors" on a different HDD. Today the RAID rebuild finally finished and my scheduled quick SMART scan started and immediately another 6TB HDD crashed with 490 bad sectors
So today I ordered a 2nd 6TB HDD... when I really don't want to be buying 6TB HDDs. I kind of wish I'd bought 4 x 12TB HDDs instead of 2 x 6TB HDDs.

So my plan was:
- Buy 4 x 20TB or larger HDDs for the DS1821+. The 4 x 20TB would cost $2900 to $3400 AUD.
- Move the DS1821+'s 4 x 16TB HDDs to my Asustor.
- Move the Asustor's 4 x 12TB HDDs to the old DS1812+.
- Step 3 would require 4 new 12TB HDDs as the DS1812+ is using RAID 6, and not SHR-2. The 4 x 12TB would cost $1800 AUD.
So for $5000 AUD I would gain:
- Only 12TB on the DS1821+ (which currently has 23TB free).
- Only 11TB on the Asustor (which currently has 12TB free).
- And extra 32TB on the DS1812+ (which currently has 12TB free).
- 7 used 6TB HDDs that I could use in the DS925+ and DX213.
