You did have it working for ownCloud, or?

I suggest to:
- deinstall Mail Station CardDAV, remove data
- reinstall it, select ownCloud CardDAV Server
- for each user:
* First check if CardDAV addressbook is working
* Then make sure "standard Adressbuch" = "Persönliches Addressbuch"
- deinstall Mail Station CardDAV again, remove data
- reinstall it, select Synology CardDAV Server
- check if it is working now

Yes, on the system DS214play and it works fine for me with ownCloud. But the tests for Synology CardDAV Server I have made on the other system DS411+II.

I have found the problem!

If you remember on post #78 I had created a new user "user3000" for testing. The user get a password with the "Generate Random Password" button inside DSM. The password for the new user had 12 characters (mixed case, numeric and special characters). After login into the Mail Station the Synology CardDAV Addressbook appeared immediately. Then I decided to change the password (it was my first idea if there might be a problem with the password) to the same that my other default user have. After switching password of the test user "user3000" nothing happened, the addressbook was still available inside roundcube.

Now I have decided to follow your suggestion of the latest post #81, but also without success. The user admin and my default DSM user are not available to see the CardDAV addressbook. Then I remembered that the password of "user3000" was also changed to a stronger ones that remained. After reinstallation of the "Mail Station CardDAV" plugin I logged in into roundcube also with the test user "user3000" but then the CardDAV addressbook did not appeared.
I changed the passwords for my default DSM user to 12 characters and after login into rouncube the book was available.

Is there something weird with passing the password automagically? Or is there a limitation of characters?

I don't know, I just integrated the existing RCM CardDAV plugin into a Synology package.

But the usual suspects for password problems are:
- single (') or double (") quotes
- slash (/) and backslash (\)
- space ( )
- ampersand (&)
- sharp braces (<) and (>)
- pipe (|)

If you can identify which character(s) are causing the problem, I can ask the plugin author (Benjamin Schieder) for a fix.

In this case for the test user, the password was exactly: caNve9$(X&%t
This worked properly.

But the other password exists of 30 characters containing the following special characters that could made problems (or the length of the password itself).
single quote (')
backslash (\)
caret (^)
tilde (~)

I tried passwords with the characters you mentioned, tried a 34 char long password, all working fine.
Maybe you can also experiment a little what the critical combination is?

Hi Erik,
back again. :) First I want to wish you also a happy new year!

I have noticed that you have released a new version (v0.9.3) of CardDAV for Synology Mail Station. I didn´t tried it until now. And also I have noticed in the release notes you have provided a manual as pdf file. I downloaded it and had a quick look on it. Very nice, good job!

But meanwhile I have experiment a little bit with the previous revision 0.9.2 and I found out something weird relating to the password.

I found a password that makes trouble, but only if the password is set before installing the CardDAV plugin. Let me explain in detail step by step because on my system the behavior is reproducible.

Test environment:
DSM 5.0-4528 Update 2
Mail Staion 20141204-0215
Synology CardDAV Server 5.2.0-0021

Tested the plugin against the Synology CardDAV Server (chose "Synology CardDAV Server" during installation)

  • uninstalled CardDAV plugin v0.9.2 (removed data)
  • uninstalled Mail Station
  • generated a strong password (containing special char) with 35 characters
  • keep the previous admin password in mind
  • changed the admin password to the new generated 35 char´s
  • logged in as admin at DSM to verify that the password is working (check, OK)
  • installed Mail Station again
  • installed CardDAV plugin v0.9.2 again
  • logged in into Mail Station (roundcube) with the user admin
  • go to 'addressbook' but the CardDAV plugin did not appeared
  • logged out from Mail Station
  • changed password of admin back to it´s previous one
  • logged in into Mail Station again with the user admin
  • go to 'addressbook' and the CardDAV book appeared and was available
  • logged out from Mail Station
  • changed the admin password again to the generated 35 char´s
  • logged in into Mail Station again
  • go to 'addressbook' and the CardDAV book remained and was still available

Now my result is that some strong passwords (with special char) could cause a problem when the password exists before installing the CardDAV plugin.
After the CardDAV plugin was installed, the user can specify any strong password without problems connecting to the CardDAV book.

Note: I would like to provide the 35 char password that make some problems via PN to be able debugging the behavior.

Keeps remembering old password?

Hi Luddi,

Thanks again for your testing and feedback.
I repeated your tests, with simplifications:
- keeping Mail Station installed
- before installing CardDAV plugin, change old password in DSM to a simple 6 char alpabetical one (instead of a complex 35 char)

This seems to cause the same issue:
- after installing the CardDAV plugin, you can login to Roundcube with the simple 6 char password, but the addressbook does not show up.
- Only if you change back to the old password (in DSM) you can see it. **)
- After you change password again in DSM you can use any password and the addressbook will remain available.

**) I have no idea where this old password is stored !
Cannot find it in the Roundcube database tables, and even if (as you have tested) you deinstall Mail Station it is still remembered ?!

I am puzzled...

Dear Basalt.

Just great work. Works oob with my local DS IP-address with https://.
CardDav-server is local owncloud ver. 7.0.4.
My owncloud user has different pw for security reasons, 8 chars long with characters and numbers.
Address book was synchronized within 10 secs (414 entries).

Cannot report any error :D

Hello Basalt,

i have just installed the package 0.9.3 and it works beautifully.
I have no problems with https and my DynDNS.
Mail Station Version: 20150204-0217
CardDAV server: Baikal 0.2.7

Now i'm still looking to integrate my CalDAV calendar on a similar light way into my mail station.
Maybe you've got even a idea or a packet? :D:)

Not sure what you mean, Baikal does have CalDAV as well.
Maybe you are looking for a Calender plugin for Mail Station (=Roundcube) ?

You might have a look at MyRoundcube, they make many plugin extensions for Roundcube (the core of Mail Station), including a Calendar plugin.I don't know if there is a ready to use package for Synology.

I tried to make a Contacts (CardDAV) plugin myself, based on their free (basic level) plugin, and found out the MyRoundcube solution has many related plugins, making it hard to build a simple and reliable Synology package. Probably a Calendar (CalDAV) plugin will suffer the same.

So I am afraid I cannot help you much further.

Maybe it's because the folder in the mailstation-package changed.
From roundcubemail to mail.
Habe das beim reaktivieren meiner Rc-Plugins gesehen!

Are there any plans out there for a new working version?

Not sure. The new MailServer looks much better than Roundcube. Disappointing: still no CardDAV connection.
Anyway, I am still on DSM 5.2 and will not upgrade to 6.0 on short term. At least until then no update from my side.
