Sorry that I can´t write in German yet. This week I also had to fizzle a bit before I got the Synology router play ball with Vodafone Kabel Router.

I have a terribly bad SAGECOM FAST 5460 which had to do all the tasks of a modem, router, and WiFi AP. In over 20 years of internet I think this one was by far the worst router I had or had to manage. For 2018 this is an unacceptable bad router. And since I was suffering disconnections and poor WiFi performance I decided to put the real thing behind it, a Synology RT2600.

My first attempt as a test was to have the SAGECOM still do its thing, and put the Synology just as a WiFi AP. I wanted to check everything was working before moving further. The RT2600 came with an older 1.1.x firmware but all in all it was a snap, in a matter of minutes everything was working and the router could download a newer 1.2.x firmware. I was ready for the next step.

I logged on Vodafone and changed the mode of the SAGECOME to Modem. It took the router, now modem, quite a while to connect. I opened the Synology RT web interface and changed the mode from AP to full Router, and changed the IP range for internal use to something of my liking. The latter would turn to be a problem but more on that later. After the RT2600 change its mode ... nothing. I could not access the internet.

I gave the Synology a full reset and have the wizard set the settings right. But almost when completing the wizard it gave an error message saying it had been impossible. By this time I think I found this forum post.
I decided to give it a full reset again but at reboot it had not fully reset itself, instead it was working as per before settings. Strange ... but now it was working. I changed the IP settings again but this time it warned me this would give issues.

Maybe I did reset another time, I can´t remember, but in conclusion part of my problems seem to have been that the SAGECOM does not like to have the router with an IP other than the standard one. Hence my post in the forum to let others know.

And by the way, the SAGECOM stays being a troublesome router, even when used as a modem. I had to turn it ON and OFF a couple of times. Maybe I should have gone for the other good option, hiring a Fritzbox from Vodafone.

The Vodafone Fritzbox is also a mess. They use a modified firmware with much less features, if you go with a fritzbox buy one on yourself. Also the Vodafone fritzbox does not support modem mode.
A different solution is to swap your modem to a newer one, cost around 30€ (Vodafone Germany).
