guten tag,
1.) i worked with the NAS and samsung 500 GB HD since 1.5 years w/o problems.
2.) In nov. 2008 when the new firmware 0728 came out i stored it (the *.pat file) on the NAS and tried to start it 2x which failed finally (error on my side). after this trial the NAS did not answer any more. switching-off was not possible. i disconnected power; then ornage LED was flashing; afer pressing the reset knob 2 times i had to reinstall the firmware again (i lost all my files); i still used the 500 GB samsung HD very seldom for some days and it seemed that it worked (this was not a robust test)
3.)Now i bought 1 TB HD of type WD 10EACS-00D6B0 (which is in the compatibility list) and installed it instead of the samsung HD; i installed the new firmware 0728 and started to copy (using the file manager) about 30..100 GB of data. after about 1 h and before finalzing the job, again the NAS was frozed (i.e. no more progress in copying visible); it was no more reachable via ethernet. by pressing the button "stop" or "cancel" in the in the file manager window (which showed the copying progress) there was an error message returned with number errno:12031. the whole PC and the NAS was frozen (i.e. was blocked); switching-off was not possible. After disconnecting harshly from 230 V power and starting agin the orange LED flashed continously. i had to load the firmware again. during a second trial of copying (about 30 GB) it happened again.
remark: copying was done 2 times with an external HD via the front USB connector
4.) now i exchanged the HDs; i used the 1 TD WD as external one via USB on my PC; it works
5.) i put again the old working 500 GB samsung in the NAS; it crashed during night and during copying process; the copying of the data was done via my PC and the ethernet connection to the NAS.
6.) the router in the net and for DSL is a fritz-box
7.) after a certain while or transfer volume the NAS is freezing/crashing. all LEDS are fine; PING (C:/ping) is possible; but NAS is no more accessible via a file browser (XP or file manager)
8.) it is no more possible to shwitch-off nominally
9.) after cold power cycle orange LED is flashing; access via ethernet is not possible
10.) firmware has to be uploaded again and it works again for a limited time
11) this holds for two HDs (500GB, 1TB) which work correct in PC environment.
danke schon mal f. eure hilfe. thomas
